NEWS:  PRACTICE AT THE AOM

To all members of the Academy of Management:

An invitation to join a new Special Interest Group

Strategizing Activities & Practice

This group was launched to advance knowledge and understanding of strategy as something people do and not just something organizations have. Research focuses on the activities and practices of strategists, with an interest in how strategic work accomplishes a wide range of individual and organizational outcomes, and also relates to broader societal and institutional trends. Attention to strategists extends beyond upper echelons and even middle managers to include other influential players such as consultants and non executives. Studies go beyond considerations such as demographics to include how aspects such as training, knowledge, identity and emotions can affect an individual’s strategic work. Theoretical and methodological pluralism is also encouraged: The group invites contributions from a wide range of perspectives on organizations, including practice, institutional, discourse, sensemaking, routines and cognition.

Join us!

The group was created to build a venue for scholars pursuing ambitious strategy research from a wide range of theoretical and methodological perspectives. We seek to push the envelope of strategic management scholarship to more fully account for the social/organizational face of strategic management.

What we plan to do

Build a stronger and a more representative community of strategic management scholars at the Academy of Management.

• Organize developmental events such as PDWs, doctoral and junior faculty consortia, etc.

• Build and maintain a pool of reviewers with a diverse set of theoretical and methodological expertise to review strategy papers submitted to the Academy of Management meetings.

• Initiate dialogue between organization and strategy scholars, both online and offline.

How to join

The only time to join the special interest group is when you renew your Academy of Management membership. For most people, this is during spring or summer when you receive a reminder from the Academy that your membership is about to expire. To affiliate with a new group, press the “Make Changes Before Renewing” button to access your chosen divisions and interest groups. The interest group “Strategizing Activities and Practices” is coded “D25” under the heading “Interest Groups.” To join, simply check the box next to the group name.

We also have an AoM Connect group (http://connect.aomonline.org) which all AoM members can join.
